N29J History

E-mail Print PDF

This glider probably has more hours under actual IFR conditions than any other in the US. Featured in the IMAX movies Storm Chasers it conducted research missions for NCAR for many years. The ship was refurbished by the SSB in 2002 and is now capable of conducting sophisticated meteorological research missions.

29J carries one of the most sophisticated instrument packages of any glider in the world. It is configured to capture real time information about the unique wave conditions and rotors that occur around Boulder. It features multiple GPS systems with data loggers, moving map display, a custom built Unix based computer, 3 axis accelerometers, transponder and dual pressure breathing oxygen systems.
