Youth Program
The July 2004 issue of Soaring magazine serves as a timely reminder about the need to involve youths in soaring. Looking around the airfield it is apparent that the gliding community is not doing a great job of attracting youths to our wonderful sport. Considering the clear political, financial and social benefits to having youths be a part of our club I spent the past few months working with the SSB board to come up with a proposal to attract a young membership.
This web page initially serves as an introduction to the concept of the youth scholarship program. In the longer term it will become the repository for information and reports on the progress of the program.
Program Goals
INFORM candidates about the sport of soaring and encourage them to join the SSB
KNIT young SSB members into an enjoyable community ready to serve the movement
DEVELOP the soaring skill of young SSB members with training, mentoring, camps & contests
REWARD the achievements of young SSB members with awards, prizes & potential scholarships
Benefits to the SSB
Revenue from tow and flight charges.
Zero direct costs to the SSB.
Hidden “political benefits”.
Lowers the average age of membership.
Youths attract youths.

The Next Steps
A special meeting of the SSB will occur on September 12th 2004 to vote on the following addition to the SSB Articles of Incorporation to provide for this new membership type.
If the proposal is accepted by the membership the SSB Board will then appoint the Youth Scholarship Coordinator and the program will commence.
Sincerely,
Colin Barry
